Our Story...

This all started with my boundless passion for furniture and fabric. I started sewing when I was eight years old and I’m still at it. While others collect stamps or dolls, I collect fabrics. I’ve used pieces from my collection to customize furniture and window treatments; I make custom tabletop-ware, window treatments, and upholstery. I’m also a longtime collector of furniture large and small. I would find a chair left on the side of the road, bring it home and refinish the wood, reupholster the fabric—whatever was needed to bring it back to life. The only thing I’ve loved more than furniture and fabrics? Art.

So creating a place that would combine an art gallery and a furniture showroom was pretty much my idea of heaven. And creating such a place in historic downtown Cambridge, is in the midst of an exciting revitalization, seemed like the perfect fit. In September 2007, I closed the door on the previous chapter in my life as chief operating officer of a major Washington, D.C. law firm—and opened the doors to the Maris Elaine Gallery.

Named in honor of my mother who inspired my sense of style, use of color, and overall appreciation for beautiful things, the gallery reflects pieces that have made me smile, marvel, and delight in their beauty—and I hope they’ll do the same for you. Rather than give shoppers yet another off-the-shelf experience, I wanted to offer a one-of-a-kind place where creativity, comfort, and sophistication converge. I like to think of our furniture as a great classic black dress, and the accessories and the original artwork as the jewelry that makes it sparkle.

Since we opened the gallery has become a destination for both Eastern Shore residents and visitors from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and beyond. It’s been a gratifying adventure so far, and I can’t wait to see what’s around the next curve.

Please stop in for a visit. I’d love to show you around.
